Welcome to the New Zealand United States Council

Founded in 2001, the New Zealand United States Council is committed to fostering and developing a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between New Zealand and the United States.  The Council is an advocate for the expansion of trade and economic links between the two countries including a comprehensive free trade agreement achieved either bilaterally or in the context of an expanded Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement.

The Council works closely with its counterpart in Washington DC, the US NZ Council, with business groups in New Zealand and with government agencies, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Embassy in Washington.

Trans Pacific Partnership

The New Zealand United States Council believes that through the Trans Pacific Partnership New Zealand and the United States should negotiate a comprehensive, high quality free trade agreement.

The United States, Australia, Malaysia, Peru and Viet Nam are currently negotiating to join the Trans Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPP) with existing members, New Zealand, Brunei, Chile and Singapore.  A successful conclusion to these negotiations will provide a freer trade and investment relationship between New Zealand and the United States.  This is a goal that has been central to the NZUS Council since the Council’s inception in 2001.
