Welcome to the New Zealand United States Council

Founded in 2001, the New Zealand United States Council is committed to fostering and developing a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between New Zealand and the United States.  The Council is an advocate for the expansion of trade and economic links between the two countries including a possible free trade agreement.

The Council works closely with its counterpart in Washington DC, the US NZ Council, with business groups in New Zealand and with government agencies, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Embassy in Washington.

Free Trade Agreement

The NZ US Council welcomes and supports the decision of the New Zealand and United States Governments to negotiate a comprehensive FTA in the context of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). For more on the Council’s point of view read "Free trade with the US - the time is now"

In March 2009 Friends of New Zealand Congressional Caucus wrote to US President Barack Obama to urge the Adminstration to continue negotiations for the United States' participation in the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPP). Also in March 2009 some 71  US companies and trade groups wrote to the President urging an early resumption of TPP negotiations.
