Founded in 2001, the New Zealand United States Council is committed to fostering and developing a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between New Zealand and the United States.  The Council is an advocate for the expansion of trade and economic links between the two countries including a possible free trade agreement.

The Council works closely with its counterpart in Washington DC, the US NZ Council, with business groups in New Zealand and with government agencies, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Embassy in Washington.

Free Trade Agreement

The New Zealand United States Council believes that New Zealand and the United States should negotiate a comprehensive, high quality free trade agreement.

The US and New Zealand Governments have yet to agree to initiate negotiations but an FTA is strongly supported by business interests in both countries.  An FTA also has support within the Senate.

In March 2008 Friends of New Zealand Congressional Caucus wrote to US Trade Representative Susan Schwab to support the Administration’s decision to enter negotiations on financial services and investment with P4 including New Zealand.
